Nene
Pronounced Nay-Nay. A fascinating history for these geese. They recovered from the brink of extinction and were saved by a team of Brits. Numbers in 2016 had recovered from 50 to over 3000. We found a few without leg tags, so not all are accounted for. I love to hear about positive programs that save endangered species. The Nene was among the first birds we saw at the Hakalau Forest Bird Sanctuary. You must hire a guide and book your visit in advance. We went with Hawaii Forest and Trail. While there, we had a chance to meet with Jack Jeffery, a well-known photographer and guide. If he is still guiding, he is worth finding, as Forest and Trail are only finding species more for birders, not photographers.
