Sometimes chilling on a warm rock and watching the day with half-open eyes is what a bear needs.
A bit of a story to this shot... We were on a logging road when we saw a Mom and Cub 500 yards away. The Mom sent the cub up the tree with a few grunts and stood protectively at the bottom. There was a large bank dropping off the road. Other than the distance, she had a vertical separation from us. While I was focused on the cub climbing, my friend Stuart yelled at me, "Get in the truck!" which was very alarming as we were very close to the truck. Thank goodness I didn't question him; I drove for the door and piled in. Mother Bear was charging us unexpectedly as we were at what I considered a safe distance. Thank you, Stu, for staying aware.
The Mother from my Cub post yesterday. Easier when reviewing photos, she was on the edge but very difficult to identify at the time, from a distance, I didn't hear her grunts. This is a 70% crop with noise reduction shot at ISO 1800.
