What?
Found a small herd of Roosevelt Elk while hiking. The bull was busy ripping small trees out ...we kept our distance, the cows would pop their heads out of the dense bush or from around tree. This was on a steep hill so it made for interesting povs shooting up.
Roosevelt Elk
An exciting few minutes when this bull decided to head in our direction, he was looking for greenery not trouble. I'm going back with a much smaller lens.
Lounging Elk
Having a mid morning back scratch followed by a nap.
A Roosevelt Elk having a lazy morning.
If you find your lawn has a new ornament like this you may live near central Vancouver Island. The Elk are safe from hunters, poachers and highway traffic, pretty smart eh?
We found a few Elk today, this big bull was ripping at cedar trees for snack foo.
Rope Head?
He didn't seem to mind his adorment, locals said he is ok he will shed his antlers soon.
We affectionately referred to this big guy as Rope Head.
Roosevelt Elk, female and calf.
We did some running in the forest to get ahead of a herd.
Bull Elk
He had eight females plus their offspring in his herd. We caught up to the females while he napped.
Female Roosevelt Elk
The herd were resting on dirt mounds.
A " 7/8"
The spike count if I am correct, in layman terms, a big Elk!
An "8/8"
This massive buck keeps an eye on us during rut season. I recently learned the colour on their antlers comes from rubbing Alder and/or Cedar trees. The light coloured tips are the natural colour.
