Orcas

The last of the mist was disappearing from a foggy morning when the two members from "A" Pod swam through the scene. I used f/8 which turns out was just enough to capture the background. The Spy-hop flop

Spyhopping is an act of coming out of the water vertically and staying above the surface momentarily, in the same way, a human treads water. An extremely powerful Orca can be spy-hopping for longer periods of time and get as much as half of its body above the surface of the water. This is a young Orca from A pod, the young whales have a visible orange tint due to toxins the Mother whale accumulates over time then passes on to the young during gestation.

Northern Residence

Little Sprout

This energetic baby whale belongs to A Pod it traveled with the Matriarch.

A61 Serge

I believe he is 26 years old perhaps half life for a Northern Resident male, really a magnificent sight when that dosal fin is travelling high above the surface of the water.

The last seconds of life.

The Dall's Porpoise is one of the fastest moving mammals in the sea a Bigg's Whale (Transient Killer Whale) cannot catch the porpoise unless it throws itself into the air with less resistance it actually gains on its prey. I missed the shot of the whale in the air as naturalist with us was screaming, bloodcurdling screams and she kept on screaming. Porpoise on the right, whale setting up for the jump behind.

I spent many. many hours on the water this summer with my Anthony. I thought I had seen Orca action until the Transient Pod showed up OMG they are high speed killers, nothing like the Northern Residents. This is minuites after T-58 took a Dall's Porpoise absolutley the most amazing hunt and kill you will ever see.
