    Red Phalarope

My Merlin bird ap believes this is a Red Phalarope, perhaps still in transtion to breeding plumage? Or could it be a juvenile? Anyone who knows please share.

    Waste deep in edibles.

The Bear paused for two seconds to look at me then, back to eating. We found him on a very bumpy backroad near Cooper Landing this morning.

  • Moose Baby

    Moose Baby

On our way north from Homer Shane spotted the back of a Moose on a bank almost out of view. We drove ahead till it was safe to pull over. I jumped out and ran across the road to find two moose calves further down the bank and Mother Moose about 150 yards back. I call that Bonus Babies :)

It didn't take them long to join Mom.

The Art of Approaching a Brown Bear in the Alaska Backcountry.

We flew in a single engine Beaver aircraft to a remote location on the northern Alaska Panhandle. Our guide, Bear Biologist Jim Phillips led our group of 5 through a soggy and muddy marsh for two days in Alaska's backcountry. The bears we viewed haven't experienced much contact with humans, they would run from us. Jim had a plan.

  • Spooked

    Spooked

This bear watched us coming down the beach, off it went into the bush but then curiosity must have brought it back. The bear wasn't in view long we heard it in the bush but didn't see it again till later that night. From our Bear Adventure in June.

  • And the rains came down!

    And the rains came down!

That misty look is caused by the rain. The walkable area of the beach ended just past the bear, then it was grasses, water and mud.

Keeping an eye on us as we kept an eye on him. Photo taken by Shane.

  • Brown Bear

    Brown Bear

Her interest was finding a boar that was hiding in the bush behind us. This was taken by Shane with his cell phone . Her closest distance to us was about 30 ft during her two passes. Pretty exciting to be that close to a very wild animal.
