I was over the moon when I saw SWR with 3 cubs this year, what an unexpected treat to see her so healthy with a family. I'm guessing two male and a female cub but who knows. The middle cub has a berry-stained tongue, berries are a huge part of their diet.
Mom is slightly ahead here cubs stay very close unless she is hunting even then they will get in her way trying to help :) If she gets frustrated a cub might get a gentle paw out of the way, a series of grunts and off they go to the nearest tree or bush.
This was the bear that walked up and licked the front bumper of my friend Anthony's SUV... that was a moment :) He is quite the beast one of the largest bears I have encountered. He looks very comfortable not at all disturbed or frightened. What has a bear this size have to be frightened about? I'd say top of the food chain.
That is what I named it Stare Bear a young bear that really didn't know what to make of us. I'm not sure if I can identify it from previous years or not, if I do discover whos cub it is I will post an update.
Bears rely on the calories and nutrients the salmon provide to gain weight so they can exsist on fat reserves through the winter. Too bad there are not that many fish around this year you would think an intelligent society would simply stop all fishing until the salmon number recover, doesn't seem to be the case.
The day Curly licked the front bumper of the vehicle we were sitting in was a moment such a large Bear so close. I have a cell video of the approach which is perfect if I ever do Bloopers of wildlife photography :)
I saw him healthy in July then he appears late August with a badly damaged front paw. He managed to catch fish so I am hoping he is going to make it. Still friendly with Georgina no cubs this year as we had hoped.
As long as she can see activity she won't quit, she was stacking up the numbers of fish this would be one of the very few days she has this type of luck. Eagle enjoying one of her fish in the background.
