What are you two up to?

After we found her she laid down as if to watch us for the entertainment value. A very chilled bear and a terrific encounter.

    Bulking up

Grass and dandelions are the main staples for a north island black bear this time of year. She was eating her way up the bank. The mark on her nose is a fairly fresh cut, more than likely from another bear. They do not like to share their green patches.

  • Dandelions

The Bears enjoy the fowers first then the remainder of the plant.

    Giving me her best side.

For springtime this is a large bear I can't imagine how large she is in the fall prior to her hibernation. I will try to find her this fall to see how she looks before her big nap.

Out with Anthony today driving the backroads looking for Black Bears, Pygmy Owls and whatever else we could find.

  • Freedom

    Freedom

Without the antlers life must be easier especially navigating the forest. I heard that the antlers can grow back at a rate of an inch a day. It won't be long before this buck is sporting a new set.

    Sunset at Beaver Lake

When it became too dark to photograph Bears we zipped over to the lake and caught the sunset. 12 hours on the road today.

  • The Ghost

    The Ghost

She is a three year old cub that survived many tragedies. She lost her Mother when she was a tiny cub, then her brother the following year. Both were killed by cars. She is tiny for her age but looks healthy enough. My friend Anthony has been watching her since she was very young. Although she hides or keeps her distance I'm sure she knows who he is. This is a big crop from a large mega pixel image.

The more grass and dandelions the happier the bear.

  • Road trip

    Road trip

On our way to the northeast coast of the island. We made a stop at Georgie Lake. The trees are a goldy green colour, very weathered, mainly older growth.

  • Hidden in the forest.

I like the road shapes and patterns of this area as I flew back to the truck.

We were quite happy when we discovered this waterfall. Taken with my iphone 13 Pro, long exposure.
