Coastal Brown Bear Family

I was fortunate to see this family a few times. She stay with her cubs on an a small island for a couple weeks.

Keeping up with Mom

The cubs managed to explore their surroundings and keep up with Mom.

He selects this spot for catching salmon as they move upstream. The rock has an angled surface perfect for bear naps when required. A gem I found in my files while cleaning up drive space. I'll mark this photo for my 2024 Bear Calendar.

She is a senior bear, small but feisty. Her favourite activity when not chasing salmon is having a good scratch—more from my files.

He is the king of staredowns, but despite his tough exterior, he is a chilled bear—more from my files.

She has fabulous curly fur, a beautiful bear—more from my files.

We meet again.

Three years ago, she charged us. We were on top of a hill at least 200 yards from her and her cub. She didn't show any signs of distress or aggression until we turned our cameras towards her cub, which was climbing a tree. We dove into the truck in time, whew! You never know with bears. I never forgot the top of her ear when I saw her two years later with a new cub, I made a quick exit.

The Laugh

It looks as if Scruffy is having a belly laugh. She is yawning.

Siesta

The Bear, formerly known as Scruffy, has an afternoon nap. I don't feel I should call her Scruffy now as she looks so good this year.

I believe she may be addicted to the pain-fighting chemical serotonin, which is released during a good scratch. She is in heaven!

Georgina's first cub at 13 years old. Very exciting for me to see her become a first time Mom at mid life.

Coastal Brown Bear and Chum Salmon

This is at the end of the salmon run when the fish have spawned. The fish are lethargic and soon to die. It is easy for the bears to pluck them out of the river.

We watch him walk the river, he didn't take the easiest route around obstacles. He pretty much walked over everything.
